Assuming you’re heading off to stay in a hotel for a few days, and that you don’t want to pack the kitchen sink, here are a few hints that might help lighten your load – or at least get rid of some surplus baggage!
Remember to pack according to where you’re going and who you’re going away with. It’s probably unnecessary to pack your bucket and spade if you’re heading off for a city break and theatre extravaganza. And if you’re planning family time with the kids you might want to leave your cocktail dress and killer heels in the wardrobe at home.
Daywear, evening wear and night wear should be appropriate for the hotel you’re staying in. If you haven’t visited the hotel before, it’s wise to go online and have a peep at it. And if you’re staying in a spa hotel, do remember to pack your costume. If, however, you’re going to be spending your days sightseeing, a pair of comfy shoes is a must, together with outerwear in case – heaven forbid – it should rain.
If your short break is centred around an activity such as climbing or cycling, make sure you pack everything you need for your chosen discipline – but remember to pack your ‘civvies’ too. Whilst hotels generally don’t insist you formally dress for dinner there is an acceptable dress code – and lycra cycling shorts generally aren’t on it.
Whilst many hotels often ironing services most do have irons in the room for use by guests. But if you don’t want to spend your precious time doing chores, it’s worth taking extra care when packing the clothes most likely to wrinkle – or leave them at home if you don’t absolutely have to take them.
For holidays with the kids, travel games and colouring books can be lifesavers, although many hotels offer these when you arrive. Same goes for toiletries, such as shampoo and conditioner. Whilst travel size bottles don’t take up much room in your suitcase, they’re often provided in your room free of charge. And a battery operated nightlight is a godsend for families with children who are afraid of sleeping in the dark. Hotel lighting doesn’t always lend itself to helping little ones get off to sleep – lamps are too bright and bathroom lights often come with unduly noisy fans that hum all night and keep the whole family awake!
If you take any regular medication, remember to pack enough for the duration of your stay. And it goes without saying that if you – or your children – have any special dietary needs you should inform the hotel prior to your arrival.
Avid readers take note, a short break in a hotel is a great opportunity to search out a few books to take with you that you’ve been meaning to read but haven’t had the time. And no holiday would be complete with photographs, so remember to pack your camera, together with spare batteries. How many of us have set up the perfect holiday snap only to have the camera give up the ghost as we press the shutter?
If you wear slippers at home, slip them into your suitcase if there’s room. It’s not wise to go barefoot in a hotel, but slippers are perfectly acceptable and can make you feel more at home.
And finally, if you are going away with the family – let them help you to pack. It might sound painful, but if anything gets left behind, you can’t be held fully responsible!
